Halligan the Wonder Dog Jeanine Grant Lister 9780692260234 Books Reviews

This book details the antics of Halligan the Pit Bull and the family that loves her. This book labels Hallie a "foster failure" - Jeanine initially agreed to foster Hallie, but it was later decided that she was unadoptable due to dog aggression. However, as you read through the book one discovers that her issues were fading over time. Her love of the dog is obvious, so part of me wonders if that is the issue, or if she has so taken with the animal that she couldn't let her go if she tried.

Pit bulls get a bad rap in the press, and Hallie demonstrates what Pitties are really like big, slobbery cuddle-monsters who like nothing better than to curl up with their family and chew on a bone. Pit Bulls are normally NOT dog-agressive (about 80% of "fighting" dogs are killed because they refuse to fight), so I suspect Hallie's issues stem from her treatment from before she came to reside with Ms. Lister. This should not be blamed on the breed as a result, but the previous owner.

But this book is about much more than Hallie. This book documents the life of a foster. The author fosters cats, kittens and helps drive the Barkmobile up to Chicago on a regular basis in her fight to save as many lives as she can. She talks about her successes, her failures (the kittens dropped off at the shelter before they were weaned really got to me) and the crazy life a foster has while they give their heart over and over to these creatures they so desperately want to save.

If you love animals, this book is a must-read. The sections are short, journal-like, and contains lots and lots of color photos even in the print edition. Even better, 50% of the profits from this book go to Helping Hounds Find Homes, an animal rescue organization in Cynthiana, Kentucky which really goes out of their way to save as many lives as they can from high-kill shelters.

In short, BUY THIS BOOK. You will not only be entertained, you will be helping to save lives.
As an ever grateful owner of a “transport” bully breed rescue dog, I thoroughly enjoyed (and can relate to) the crazy antics of Halligan. Anyone who owns a rescue can tell you there is something special about rescue dogs…like they know and appreciate and love to the fullest. The author also shares the happiness and heartbreak of trying to save as many (sometimes sickly) cats and dogs from kill shelters. The countless hours and many long nights these volunteers spend transporting dogs and cats from the kill shelters to safe homes is truly an inspiration.
in a recent thread about her dog, the owner had this to say about Halligan
"... her energy and prey drive increased until they were off the charts. She chewed everything in sight--I wrote a book about her and the list of stuff she destroyed covers three pages. She has killed mice, rabbits, opossums, snakes (we lived in the middle of about 100 uninhabited acres, so she had free run), a fawn, a fox, you name it. She has chased cars and treed squirrels and raccoons. She has even caught and killed a black vulture with a six-foot wingspan."

Would a real "animal-lover" really humble brag about allowing their terrier maul and maim other animals? Her dog doesn't kill animals because it's hungry or scared, it does so because it was bred and trained to and instead of trying to diminish this kill-lust, the author seemingly encourages it. Even laughs at it! As another said, by giving her dog free reign and knowing the dog would kill wildlife, including young deer and rabbits, she is little better than a dogfighter who gets off on seeing other dogs killed.

If you really love dogs and animals, then don't support this type of ownership and "rescue" by buying this book. The dog now apparently lives in a smalltown, maybe even down the road from you, and just imagine after years of being allowed to kill rodents, birds, and larger mammals and an early life of dog fighting what this dog could do to your pet if it gets loose.
I absolutely LOVED every single minute of this heartwarming book. It gave great insight on what it is like to foster an animal, the good, the bad and the downright hysterical (loved the skunk antics!).
I have to admit, I'm a cat lover & don't know much about pit bulls, or raising dogs, but I fell in love with Halligan! Such a great story about an unloved dog and the incredible bond she formed with her foster Mom. Ms. Listers ongoing quest to save so many animals from certain death, is inspiring and incredibly informative. This story left me convinced that Halligan has at last found happiness.
If you have ever wondered whether or not the animal foster life is for you, then THIS book is for you. This heartwarming, yet honest, story follows a year in the life of a foster mom and her spunky, loving, (and sometimes brainless!) pit bull, Halli. While this is a true story, it is NOT a boring non-fiction read. The author is able to summon the full range of emotions of well-written fiction. I laughed, cried, cringed, laughed some more (seriously, this dog!!) and learned a lot about what it takes to save animals from the dreaded "kill list" within shelters. I finished this book in one sitting, and as my ten year old daughter watched my reactions while I read she asked if she could read it when I was finished. She took the book to bed with her would not put it down! Twenty minutes after lights out she asked if she could turn the light back on and keep reading. Any book that can leave a 35 year old drying tears (both happy and sad tears) and a 10 year old begging to read more is a winner!
